Hair Style : : Cornrows and Fro-Hawk…Sort of

There truly are genuine, good people in this world :o)

Some of you may always hear me talk about N Natural Hair Studio in Silver Spring, MD, well the sweet owner, Angela, decided to take the time out to say thank you to the bloggers who have supported her since she first opened up shop earlier this year. She graciously offered do my hair…on the house! It was a PLEASANT surprise and I am more than grateful for her to acknowledge and thank her blogger supporters!

I got my hair trimmed, which I really needed since I hadn’t gotten one in over a year! To my surprise, I only had to trim off about a 1/4″! I think that was a first in many many years! I am telling you, it’s because I seal my ends religiously! Sealing has saved so much of my hair! She also washed and conditioned it which was my fav part, it was like I was getting a scalp massage at a spa! So relaxing after a long day at work. Ahhhh….. I need to do that more often lol

Here’s the final hair style Angela did for me! She cornrowed the back 2/3rds of my head in a freestyle design that she came up with and then I left the top 1/3rd out so I could twist it and make a half-mohawk-sort of thing. Either way, I loved it! I was kind of nervous to wear my hair in such a different style since I pretty much wear it the same every day, so it took a little getting used to. But I got SOOOO many compliments, I was even stopped several times by random people who wanted to know where I got my hair done or just to say they liked it. Made me feel all gushy inside hehe :o)

Check out some pics I posted from my instagram:

When I initially twisted my hair at the top, I did a bantu-knot twist out so that the curls on the top part would be tighter and not so huge (You can see in the first couple of pics above) but as the days went by it got bigger and I actually liked it more that way hehe. When I re-twisted it, I just did a regular twist-out and the front part dangled over my face a big more and had more volume.

At night, I just re-twisted the top part (or not, if I was feeling lazy lol) and then wrapped a scarf around the cornrows and tied it in the front. I rocked this style for a little over a week. I really wish I could have longer but ya’ll know I have a scalp that can’t ack right lol So I had to take them out and give my scalp a good scrub. It was fun while it lasted….

Thanks Angela :o)

N Natural Hair Studio…Open for Business!

N Natural Hair Studio…Open for Business!

Last Saturday I hit up the grand opening of N Natural Hair Studio in Silver Spring. The studio is in a nice, low-key spot on the second floor of an office complex off Colesville Rd. and New Hampshire, right across the street from the Enclave Apartments. When I arrived, there was a short line to get in and the owner, Angela, was at the door greeting everyone as they walked in. They also collected the contact information for everyone as well on their nifty iPad, definitely a smart business move :o) It was my first time meeting the owner and she is so sweet and very professional. She was so bubbly and super excited about her new business venture :o) I wish her much success!

Her studio is a cozy, natural haven with bright orange décor accents, which gives it a very welcoming feel. Oh, and I can’t forget the cute cupcakes with the frosting decorated with her logo! She sells several brands of natural products and offers a slew of services. The Sugar Scalp Exfoliation treatment caught my attention hehe….(I’ll be using my $20 off gift certificate I got in my goody bag!)

Her prices seem reasonable although I am not so keen on natural hair salon price points (she charges by the hour for most services) and her skills for styling hair, especially locs, are phenomenal. The following are some of the services N Natural Studio will offer:

  • Loc Services
    • Starters
    • Grooming
    • Styling
    • Repair
  • Loose Hair Services
    • Two Strand Twists
    • Gel Twists
    • Flat Twists
    • Cornrows
    • Twist Out
    • Coil out
    • Flat Twist Up-do
  • Children’s Services
  • Treatments
    • Sugar scalp exfoliation
    • Bentonite clay
    • Hot oil
    • Herbal rinses
    • DC’s
    • Steam
  • Color
  • Cuts & trims

These are the product lines she currently carries:

  • Alikay Naturals (caught my eye! Anxious to try!)
  • Shea Radiance
  • Coco Curls
  • Wonder Curl
  • Taliah Waajid
  • Chic Afrique
  • Joie Naturals (MyGel)
  • Walters Wholesome Goods Honey (the only black honey bee keepers in the DMV area!)
  • Senica
  • Ginger + Liz nail polish (vegan, animal friendly nail polish collection run by two young and fabulous black women out of New York)

The grand opening also included special guest, Dr. Phoenyx Austin, who was promoting her book If You Love It, It Will Grow! A Guide to Growing Long Afro-Textured Hair. Not only is she and her hair gorgeous, but she’s also a physician, author, media personality and entrepreneur and is well-known in the natural hair community for her guest appearances on blogs like CurlyNikki and BGLH (she’s super google-able). Unfortunately, I didn’t get a chance to chat with her (just snapped a few pics) because she had quite a line waiting but I heard a ton of great things about her and her book. I may just have to pick up a copy myself!

Check out N Natural Hair Studio if you’re in the area! I think having a local natural hair salon in Montgomery county is great because there definitely is a need for them. That truck all the way to DC can be a super process lol

Congrats to Angela on the grand opening!

New Natural Hair Studio in Silver Spring, MD!

New Natural Hair Studio in Silver Spring, MD!

Ladies of Montgomery County (and the surrounding DMV area!) I have exciting news for you!!

There’s a new natural hair salon in town!! N Natural Hair Studio!

I guess my excitement stems from being natural for years and not having any professionals to turn to for guidance on natural hair care. I’d go into an african-american catering hair salon and get those side-eye stares like “good luck with that!” Yea, wasn’t fun… anyway…. so you know how this whole “natural” thing recently in the past couple years became the latest and greatest (kinda sad since it’s been around since Adam and Eve in the garden…but hey today is the day). It’s definitely more main stream and more socially acceptable, making life for us long timers so much easier! I am so grateful for salon owners like Angela Walker! How ironic is this, her hair studio is literally on the same street I lived on when I was 1 year newly nappy back in ’06….timing is everything isn’t it lol

Oh and Miss Angela will be having a grand opening Saturday, April 7th (Easter weekend) from 11:00am until 8:00pm and it looks like there will be Giveaways, products for sale (yes!) and I’m sure lots of other naturals who share the same passion as us :o)  Check out this link for more information on the grand opening! You can also register to attend (I’ll be there!). Be sure to spread the word

I was able to find out more about the hair studio on Facebook and twitter, so check it out! I’m always down for the cause. Yayy for naturals!! lol :o)

— Will I see you the grand opening!?
