Product :: Wonder Curl Polishing Pomade & Butter Than Love Whipped

Product :: Wonder Curl Polishing Pomade & Butter Than Love Whipped

I am really excited to share these next two products because I have been eyeing this brand for awhile hehe. I first discovered WonderCurl at the grand opening of N Natural Hair Studio and I knew I wanted to try it out eventually. I am a sucker for cute logos and nice packaging! Lol So I went out on a whim and contacted WonderCurl to see if I could do a review and they graciously agreed and sent me their newest product, the Polishing Pomade.

It’s crazy how things are timed perfectly… WonderCurl hosted a meet-up the other week (held at N Natural Hair Salon!) and It happened to be the week after I received the product to review. So I figured I’d wait and her to learn more about the products at the meetup before I tried them out. I ended up buying the Butter Than Love Whipped at the meetup hehe So I will devote this post to both products :o)

Oh and here’s a couple shots from the meetup. The owner of WonderCurl, Scarlett, gave a live tutorial using a few of her products. I also even got to meet a few of my readers/followers!

I must say it was so nice meeting Scarlett! She is such a sweet person which a great spirit. Can I also tell you how gorgeous she is in person?! Ugh lol and her hair….BEAUTIFUL! She had the ends dyed green which looked dope.

So my product experiences…. I’ll start with the Pomade. It retails for $5 for 2 oz. This pomade is not like your typical solid pomade like Dax or Murry’s. It contains no wax or any of that hard stuff. It is really smooth, creamy, pudding-ey texture. When you rub it in it feels like a thick oil. As far as the consistency, the first thing that came to mind was the Koils by Nature Peppermint Gel but not as liquidy.

It smells soooo yummy! WonderCurl teamed up with a company called YumYum Candle to make the yummy mango coconutty scent and WonderCurl is also selling a solid perfume in the same scent! Cute :o)

Product Description

Put the Polishing Pomade in your hair for super shine and hair that smells wonderful and paired with the Solid Perfume in the matching scent, you are now ready for summer.

Ingredients

Caprylic Glyceride, Soybean oil, Avocado butter, Organic Coconut Oil, Elaesis guineesis (Palm) Kernel Oil, Azadirachta indica (Neem) Oil, Fragrance. NO PETROLEUM, MINERAL OIL, BEESWAX, LANOLIN, PARABENS, GLYCERIN, SULFATES OR SILICONES

So the way I used the pomade was to polish my edges when I did my normal twists. This was the best method of use for my hair. It gave a semi-good hold, it didn’t hold like a gel or anything but my edges are really thick and this did a good job of blending them with the rest of my hair. It also made them really soft and shiny. I was gifted only a small sample size (I think it’s about 1 oz.) but I only needed to use a little bit so it should last me a few uses. I think this would be great if you have finer hair/thinner edges as it would really tame any flyaways. I also used a little bit over the length of my hair when fluffing to add shine and to make my hair smell good :o)

Up next is the Butter Than Love Whipped. It’s a thick, fluffy, cake frosting-like, shea hair butter. It retails for $12 for 4 oz. or $20 for 8 oz. I bought mine from N Natural Hair Studio and they only sold the 8 oz. size but you can check out the WonderCurl website to see other retailers or to buy online. Oh and check this out, I just got this in my email! I guess it is in the new CurlKit if you subscribe to it :o)

Hehe just thought I would share the love :o)

So back to the matter at hand, the Butter Than Love…..

Product Description

Butter than Love Hair Whipped is a dream for parched curls. This thick and rich cream is loaded with oils and butters resulting in hair that is full of life and bounce.

Ingredients

Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Castor Oil, Shea Butter, Caprylic/Capric/Stearic Glycerides, Cetyl Alcohol, Glyceryl Stearate, Cetearyl Alcohol, Sodium Stearoyl Lactylate, Acrylates/C-10 Alkyl Acrylates, Phenoxyethanol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Fragrance. NO PETROLEUM, MINERAL OIL, BEESWAX, LANOLIN, PARABENS, GLYCERIN, SULFATES OR SILICONES FRAGRANCE IS PTHALATE FREE

I really love the Butter Than Love and I am learning that my hair really responds best to thick, WHIPPED shea-based products. They are pretty much the only products that really seal in moisture and keep it super soft and supple. I also noticed my hair loves products that contain castor oil, which is also in the ingrediants. One thing though, the BTL is unscented which kinda made me sad because I LOVE hair products that smell good. Scarlett mentioned that it used to have a honeysuckle scent but her customers said it was too overbearing so she catered to her customers needs and made them unscented! Can’t be mad at that! It’s still a great product. My hair stayed moisturized all week and I didn’t reapply any product, just spritzed my hair when I re-twisted. It REALLY sealed the water in my hair each time I re-twisted.

This product also comes in a Pudding and the difference between the two is that the pudding is lighter and of course more pudding like. It applies more “wet” if that makes sense. Think Shea Moisture Curl Smoothie. It doesn’t seal as well as the whipped because it is not as thick. I’d love to try the pudding one day to see what the difference is in my hair.

Now I am going to give you a disclaimer about the pics of my hair on the first day, I really don’t know what the heck I did but my twists came out a bit crazy lol and I say this to say that it was ME and NOT the product lol

And here are pics of my hair after I spritzed and re-twisted. I think it was on the 3rd day

You can really see how the moisture is sealed in and how shiny my hair is. I am so glad I discovered this! I will put this on   my top favs list for sure. I really want to try another WonderCurl product, the Get Set Hair Jelly. This was the product Scarlett demonstrated at the meetup. I also heard some ladies like it better than Kinky Curly Curling Custard….and you know how I feel about KCCC lol but I am more than open to giving it a shot because I love the other WonderCurl products thus far!

National Natural Hair Meetup Day — May 19, 2012

National Natural Hair Meetup Day — May 19, 2012

This Saturday is National Natural Hair Meetup Day everybody!

Now I always thought that meetups were kinda corny and never thought I would join in on them #dontjudgeme lol but things change…I’m going to a natural hair meetup ;o)

NNHMD is an annual one-day event. Its purpose is to allow the opportunity for women across the country to meet in their own communities while networking, sharing and meeting (virtually) other women across the country participating in meetups on the same day. Natural hair meetups are events designed to share information, techniques, inspiration and products to aid individuals in their natural hair journey…

Attendees of the natural hair meetup will be able to:

  • Meet other naturals in their area
  • Gain exposure to natural hair product lines and companies
  • Learn the process of planning and executing a natural hair meetup (event hosts)
  • Meet natural hair and beauty bloggers and Youtube vloggers
  • Network with other natural hair meetup organizers (event hosts)
  • Discover resources, techniques, products and people that can serve as inspiration and information for the natural hair care journey

This blog has definitely pulled me out of my comfort zone and allowed me to open myself up to more people, it’s truly been a blessing and I don’t take the opportunity for granted. So with that said….I will be at the meetup sponsored by Koils by Nature!

Here’s the info for the Washington, DC/Maryland/VA

N Natural Hair Studio…Open for Business!

N Natural Hair Studio…Open for Business!

Last Saturday I hit up the grand opening of N Natural Hair Studio in Silver Spring. The studio is in a nice, low-key spot on the second floor of an office complex off Colesville Rd. and New Hampshire, right across the street from the Enclave Apartments. When I arrived, there was a short line to get in and the owner, Angela, was at the door greeting everyone as they walked in. They also collected the contact information for everyone as well on their nifty iPad, definitely a smart business move :o) It was my first time meeting the owner and she is so sweet and very professional. She was so bubbly and super excited about her new business venture :o) I wish her much success!

Angela (on the right) and Tizita Araya

Her studio is a cozy, natural haven with bright orange décor accents, which gives it a very welcoming feel. Oh, and I can’t forget the cute cupcakes with the frosting decorated with her logo! She sells several brands of natural products and offers a slew of services. The Sugar Scalp Exfoliation treatment caught my attention hehe….(I’ll be using my $20 off gift certificate I got in my goody bag!)

Her prices seem reasonable although I am not so keen on natural hair salon price points (she charges by the hour for most services) and her skills for styling hair, especially locs, are phenomenal. The following are some of the services N Natural Studio will offer:

  • Loc Services
    • Starters
    • Grooming
    • Styling
    • Repair
  • Loose Hair Services
    • Two Strand Twists
    • Gel Twists
    • Flat Twists
    • Cornrows
    • Twist Out
    • Coil out
    • Flat Twist Up-do
  • Children’s Services
  • Treatments
    • Sugar scalp exfoliation
    • Bentonite clay
    • Hot oil
    • Herbal rinses
    • DC’s
    • Steam
  • Color
  • Cuts & trims

These are the product lines she currently carries:

  • Alikay Naturals (caught my eye! Anxious to try!)
  • Shea Radiance
  • Coco Curls
  • Wonder Curl
  • Taliah Waajid
  • Chic Afrique
  • Joie Naturals (MyGel)
  • Walters Wholesome Goods Honey (the only black honey bee keepers in the DMV area!)
  • Senica
  • Ginger + Liz nail polish (vegan, animal friendly nail polish collection run by two young and fabulous black women out of New York)

The grand opening also included special guest, Dr. Phoenyx Austin, who was promoting her book If You Love It, It Will Grow! A Guide to Growing Long Afro-Textured Hair. Not only is she and her hair gorgeous, but she’s also a physician, author, media personality and entrepreneur and is well-known in the natural hair community for her guest appearances on blogs like CurlyNikki and BGLH (she’s super google-able). Unfortunately, I didn’t get a chance to chat with her (just snapped a few pics) because she had quite a line waiting but I heard a ton of great things about her and her book. I may just have to pick up a copy myself!

Check out N Natural Hair Studio if you’re in the area! I think having a local natural hair salon in Montgomery county is great because there definitely is a need for them. That truck all the way to DC can be a super process lol

Congrats to Angela on the grand opening!

New Natural Hair Studio in Silver Spring, MD!

New Natural Hair Studio in Silver Spring, MD!

Ladies of Montgomery County (and the surrounding DMV area!) I have exciting news for you!!

There’s a new natural hair salon in town!! N Natural Hair Studio!

I guess my excitement stems from being natural for years and not having any professionals to turn to for guidance on natural hair care. I’d go into an african-american catering hair salon and get those side-eye stares like “good luck with that!” Yea, wasn’t fun… anyway…. so you know how this whole “natural” thing recently in the past couple years became the latest and greatest (kinda sad since it’s been around since Adam and Eve in the garden…but hey today is the day). It’s definitely more main stream and more socially acceptable, making life for us long timers so much easier! I am so grateful for salon owners like Angela Walker! How ironic is this, her hair studio is literally on the same street I lived on when I was 1 year newly nappy back in ’06….timing is everything isn’t it lol

Oh and Miss Angela will be having a grand opening Saturday, April 7th (Easter weekend) from 11:00am until 8:00pm and it looks like there will be Giveaways, products for sale (yes!) and I’m sure lots of other naturals who share the same passion as us :o)  Check out this link for more information on the grand opening! You can also register to attend (I’ll be there!). Be sure to spread the word

I was able to find out more about the hair studio on Facebook and twitter, so check it out! I’m always down for the cause. Yayy for naturals!! lol :o)

— Will I see you the grand opening!?
