Girl Behind the Curl… Miya!

This Girl behind the curl holds a dear place in my heart :o) Miya is one of my old floor mates back in 1st Floor Frazier Hall in the Tubman Quadrangle back at my alma mater, Howard University. Man, my freshmen year was one of the best. We have so many memories from our first floor family. It was funny because almost my ENTIRE floor was from New York and here I was, the token Cali girl from the Valley lol fortunately we all bonded and each girl will always hold a special place in my heart….and on even on my blog lol! She was actually part of my inspiration to go natural! She was one of the first people I met who did a Big Chop and can rock a FIERCE TWA any day of the week. Meet my cute curlfriend Miya!

Introduction : : Do share a little about yourself!

My name is Miya Cato. I am 27 from Queens, NY and currently living in DC. I am a Howard graduate…class of 07…and now a Patent Examiner. Hanging with my pups, some cooking, blog surfing, fashion and traveling are some of the things I enjoy doing.

In the beginning : : What inspired you to go embrace your natural-ness? OR If you’ve been natural since forever, what inspired you to never get a perm?

Well, I had a perm growing up and on and off through my adult years. But, I’ve always been one to try new things or switching it up. The spring semester of my freshman year at Howard, I cut all my hair off and was going to the barbershop; getting all different designs in it. I had that for about a year, then grew it back and had a texturizer for another two years. Decided to perm it again to have it in a mohawk…which I loved lol. And then I cut it again, going to the barbershop for almost two years and finally decided to grow it back all natural Christmas Eve 2011. Seeing friends and reading blogs got me interested in embracing my “natural-ness”. And it’s something different, since I like change.

Your uniqueness : : How would describe your hair and how do you like to wear/style your hair daily? i.e. wash-n-go’s, twists, straight, protective styles, etc.

How would describe your hair and how do you like to wear/style your hair daily? i.e. wash-n-go’s, twists, straight, protective styles, etc.

Right now I have a  TWA with different textures. Mostly in the 4′s and some straight patterns on my crown while having low porosity.  I love it though! I have only experimented with wash-n-go’s, but will try other styles when I have a little more length.

Choosing favorites : : What are some fav products you can’t live without or would recommend to someone else? How do you use them?

My go-to products are coconut oil, shea moisture curl enhancer and the purification masque, kinky curly custard. Also my J/A/S/O/N shampoo and conditioners.

Drop some knowledge : : Do you have an awesome hair practice/technique you’ve learned and wouldn’t mind sharing? OR is there something you’d like to learn more about?

I can’t say I have a marvelous hair practice/technique, but what works for me and my hair right now are my wash-n-go’s. When I do deep condition my hair, it’s with my J/A/S/O/N shampoo and conditioner, some apple cider vinegar (thanks Lauren lol), and the shea moisture purification masque.  If I decide to switch up the deep conditioner, I might use some greek yogurt with different oils, including cocunut, EVOO, tea tree and rosemary.  I have also tried Karishma Herbal Henna, which was cool because it helped a little with my curl pattern and gave a little color to my hair.  I’ve only done that treatment once, but I do plan on doing it again very soon.

K.I.T. : : How can we stay connected with you? i.e. website, e-mail, social media, etc.
